This 3" Lockback double sided pocket knife is made with Cholla Cactus and a 2 1/4" Damascus steel blade. Cholla Cactus represents more than 20 species of the opuntia genus (Family Cactacea) in the North American deserts. Cholla is a term applied to various shrubby cacti of this genus with cylindrical stems composed of segmented joints. These stems are actually modified branches that serve several functions -- water storage, photosynthesis and flower production. Cholla Wood is the inner skeleton of a specific type of cacti plant. Once it has died and dried out, it is then set it with an epoxy dyed with different colors. The Cholla wood is the first material Santa Fe Stoneworks has created in house making it a one of a kind material for pocket knives.
The blade is made of Damascus steel which is characterized by its strength, edge holding ability and dramatic appearance. The Damascus steel used in these knives comes from Japan and is 'Sanmai Damascus' or sandwich Damascus. There is a core of VG-10 'Super Stainless Steel' with 16 layers of SUS410 high carbon stainless steel on each side, then pressed between two steel plates with holes and ball bearings to produce the 'Raindrop Damascus' rust free blade with 33 layers of steel.
